Louise’s story
The name of the centre was chosen following a public appeal and is in honour of Gorleston-born Louise Hamilton. Louise was born in 1969 and was a pupil at Wroughton and Lynn Grove schools before she went to Bristol University and graduated with a degree in languages. She became a university researcher and has done an incredible work in Ukraine.
At the age of just 26, Louise was diagnosed with breast cancer. She sadly passed away aged 28. While Louise was living with her cancer, she had found the help offered to her by the Bristol Cancer Help Centre to be enormously beneficial.
Her mother, Roberta Lovick, was inspired by Louise’s experience of a supportive care and information centre in Bristol to start fundraising for a similar centre for people in Great Yarmouth and Waveney.
The Louise Hamilton Centre
The centre is located in the grounds of the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk, and was conceived by Palliative Care East (PCE), a local charity set up to serve the local population around Great Yarmouth and the surrounding area, by providing care and information services for anyone, whether patients or their families, whose lives are affected by life-limiting illness such as cancer or motor neurone disease.
The original design is based around the idea of providing a high quality inspiring space that will bring hope to patients and visitors.
The dramatic compound-curved yellow wall winds its way in and out of the building connecting the outside with the inside, and it’s shape draws inspiration from boat hulls – a reference to the building’s coastal location, and the notion of an ark as a place of refuge.
Treatment and counselling spaces wrap around the lounge area which provides a central hub onto which all other spaces connect – private spaces discreetly to the perimeter, and social and communication spaces towards the middle
The centre is open from 0930 to 1930 on weekdays and 1130 to 1630 at weekends. You can call the centre on 01493 453100.

Our Parish Involvement
As one of the two local charities selected by parishioners to benefit from our additional fund-raising in 2016, funds for the centre will be raised through a variety of events. Already, some £250 has been collected at our St Patrick’s Eve Presentation.
Our regular market stall usually raises a goodly sum each month.
The market stall is co-ordinated by Pam Storey – who would be delighted to have some additional helpers, as well as donations of good quality articles to sell. Please ring 01502 711 966 if you can help.
If you have any other ideas for a fund-raising activity, please get in touch with Fr. Martin!
