We have a range of Fundraising and Social Activities which may change from year to year. We show our local contact person for each of these on the “Parish Contacts” page.
We record the current ones here, together with some information – on the attached pages – about the Charities which stand to benefit from them. We will also post a link to their own website, if they have one.
We have also produced a schedule of the Parish Groups which meet on a regular basis, click here to view it – though we do advise you to contact the listed organiser BEFORE travelling to ant event or activity!
The Parish Pastoral Council will be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in contributing to the Social Life of the parish.
Like most Parishes in England & Wales, we support “APF – Missio” through their famous Red Box scheme.
We also raise funds for “CAFOD” — mainly from contributions for refreshments after 18:00 Mass.
As a parish, we have chosen to give our continuing
support to two international charities.
These are “The Congo School for Peace” and “Mary’s Meals”.
Each December, we also seek nominations from parishioners to identify the Local Charities which we will support during the coming year. For example, the East Anglian Children’s Hospice:
Beccles Hospital; the East Anglia Air Ambulance; and Beccles May Centre, have all benefited recently from our Social Events and Activities. For 2018, our selected charities are “Guide Dogs for the Blind” and the purchase of a Defibrillator for the parish.
To raise further funds for our Local Charities, over the summer we have a Market Stall at the regular “Friday Market” in Beccles Market Square, selling donated goods, books, bric-a-brac and home-made produce. More helpers are always welcome!
Another activity we support is the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust with their annual sponsored “Ride & Stride” event. Half of the funds raised by our participants comes immediately to the Parish. The other half goes to the Trust which can be approached for help with specific preservation projects for the Parish.
St Mary’s Fund was established in 1990 to enable our Priest to give assistance to worthy causes within the parish. At present, the fund relies on profits from the refreshments after 10:30 Mass; any further donations are most welcome.
Sadly, the Ramblers have lost their driving force; would YOU like to help re-ignite this very friendly activity? Contact Fr Martin or email the editor.
We usually meet monthly and explore different localities in and around the Waveney Valley. We gather at a suitable venue for coffee and cake, followed by a stroll for an hour or two. After this comes lunch at a nearby hostelry or hotel. Nothing TOO strenuous!
The Wednesday Club meets monthly in the Presbytery for informal gatherings and activities over a tea or coffee – with cakes and biscuits donated by members. There is often a visiting speaker and a raffle is usually held – with funds raised being contributed to the parish. As at October 2018, this group was in abeyance; If you can help get it going, please call Fr Martin or email the editor..
If there is any other activity you would like to see – or even better, be prepared to organise – please contact the Priest or the Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council.
They will be delighted to help you get started.
